Charles Paris McNamara - Jane Horrobin

Charles Paris McNamara

Married Kingaroy, Queensland - 20 December 1939

Charles Paris McNAMARA married Jane HORROBIN at St Michael and All Angels Church of England Kingaroy, 20 December 1939. The man known as the "Burrandowan Cyclone" had met the popular staffer of the Kingaroy Hospital when she worked as a nurse at the Burrandowan homestead.

Charlie left Burrandowan after a disagreement with station management when Jane was forced to eat meals with the rough and tumble station hands and not with senior station staff in the main dining room.

The affable, slightly built man with a stutter and the big raw-boned, outgoing nurse were a most unlikely match. Charlie was considered the best stockman in the district but left his job at Coven Station and took up a job as wardsman at the Kingaroy Hospital in 1940 to be near his wife.

The photograph (above) taken by Charlie's niece Kitty Creevey was lucky to have survived processing and printing and captured all the members of the official wedding party something that formal photographs had failed to do. It is the only known photographic record of Charlie and Jane, her brother Charles Horrobin and sister Alice Horrobin. The junior bridesmaid is Eva Wood.
